Kuching Xmas Parade 17/12/11

KUCHING: The fine weather and good coordination between organisers and authorities allowed the Christmas Parade in the city centre here last Saturday night to proceed smoothly without any glitches and problems.

It involved a big crowd of close to 6,000 people, both young and old. Dressed as Santa Claus, Santarina or wearing costumes depicting Biblical characters, participants were seen cheerful as they spread the message of peace and extend the Christmas festive spirit to Kuching folks.

Some 24 churches comprising Methodist, Baptist and churches under the Kuching Ministers’ Fellowship sent parade groups to participate.  All the church members held candles and sang Christmas carols to symbolise the angels proclaiming the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ two thousand years ago.

The Christmas songs were traditional hymns such as Silent Night, Joy to the World, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O Come, All Ye Faithful, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and many more.

There was live music provided by Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade musical brass bands bringing more excitement to the parade.  Members of the parade also gave away specially made balloons as gifts to the public.

The parade featured 10 colourful floats adorned with Christmas themes such as The Angels, Peace, The Nativity Scene and Noah’s Ark.

Earlier, the participants assembled at the Dewan Masyarakat Padungan compound before the commencement of the parade around 7pm.

They then walked a 4km route covering Jubilee Ground, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahim (Waterfront, Lebuh Temple, Harbour View Hotel), Lebuh Wayang (Medan Pelita / Star Cineplex), Jalan Tun Abdul Rahim (Waterfront), Sarawak Plaza, Jalan Song Thian Cheok (MAS office), Jalan Ban Hock (MBKS flats) and back to Jubilee Ground again.

The roads were temporarily blocked from 7pm to 10pm for the parade.  Organised by Kuching District Methodist churches, this year’s theme for the parade was ‘Peace in Christ’
